Chinese skits started in the early 1980s, a new form of artistic expression that made its first appearance during the CCTV's Spring Festival Gala Evening, which has inherited and developed some of the popular aspects of other art forms like stage plays, cross-talk, song-and-dance duet and mini-play.

The skit Eating Noodles staged by Chen Peisi and Zhu Shimao was the first of its kind ever put on the CCTV's Spring Festival Gala Evening, and won sound applause and approval from the audience with its humorous and comical effects. Moreover, this first skit set off a surge of skit shows during each of the following Spring Festival Gala Evenings, with profound effects and historical influence.

Since then, a large group of skit stars have shown up, represented by Yan Shunkai, Zhao Lirong, Song Dandan, Gong Hanlin and Zhao Benshan, elevating the art of the skit to its peak of fame. Skits can be based on greatly varying subjects like current affairs and daily stories. By being close to daily life, talking about life from innovative angles in refined lines, skits possess universal and strong appeal. Some skits are designed to lampoon injustice, some to reveal the truth and some to teach viewers something through entertainment. With its humorous and comical lines and performances, skits are moreover an art of “laughter”, which makes it an ever-present member on the stage of arts.
