Shu Lai Bao is a kind of folk art popular throughout China, also known as Shun Kou Liu, Liu Kou Zhe or Lian Zi Zui. Originally, Shu Lai Bao was performed by artists wandering about the streets and playing in front of stores to ask for money. They’d been praising the wares of the local shopkeepers one by one as if they were counting (Shu) incoming (Lai) treasures (Bao).

With rich experiences and emotions aroused by different scenes, performers of Shu Lai Bao are well capable of improvising, with flexible reference to the classics, comparison between the past and the present and different narration techniques. As a result, they have developed some fixed sentences. After adopting some expressive techniques from crosstalk, Shu Lai Bao has developed into Duikou Shu Lai Bao, with improved artistic expressive force and new pieces pointed to current affairs. Humor and wit are two of the artistic characteristics of Shu Lai Bao.

Many percussion instruments have been employed by Shu Lai Bao performers, and most commonly used now are the seven clappers consisting of two big bamboo clampers (called Dayao) and five small bamboo clampers (called Jiezi), which are played to accompany singing, as a means to connect lyrics and help with the overall effect. Complex rhythms and varying tones may also been played with the seven clappers before the main performance as a separate show.
